One acronym is confusing enough. But 3 in one blog post: I am challenging your patience as a reader. But we have been working with 3 very complimentary technologies:
- Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- Internet of Things (IoT)
- Building Information Model (BIM)
GIS provides the where component. IOT the real-time data and BIM 3D models. So as an example: let me see my office on a map. Allow me to add a CAD model of that building to that map so i can see it in 3D. And let me monitor the outside temperature, via a sensor, and get an alerts when temperatures reach a critical threshold, so heat sensitive external equipment can be safeguarded. The image below shows this scenario.
GIS IOT BIM Integration
There has been much discussion in the press about the integration of these technologies. Often that means one large proprietary solution being integrated with another. At some point these will be good solutions, but most are far away from completion. Another challenge will be cost. Simplicity and affordability are key.
Simple, Affordable GIS IOT BIM Integration
As an industry, we are still at the early stages of this integration. And there is plenty of background complexity in bringing these technologies together.
Simple and affordable has always been a driver behind our work at WebMapSolutions. Whether it be building intuitive web apps, or guiding clients on the most appropriate solution path. We were asked by a number of clients to investigate a simple affordable way to bring these technologies together. Our approach centered on open source, that allowed us to control all aspects of the integration. We decided to build web apps to leverage this integrated technology. Below is a short demo showing some of the results of our work.
