I always love hearing about clever geospatial commercial solutions. Yesterday I was told about one which warranted a blog mention.
Clever GeoSpatial Commercial Solutions
A European bank had a credit card fraud problem. They were finding much time and money was going into checking unusual use of customer credit cards. This is actually a common problem. I live in Salt Lake City, when last in Barcelona I made some expensive credit card purchases. My credit card company were soon contacting me, wondering if my credit card had been stolen.
This particular European bank was looking for a solution to the problem. They teamed up with a European phone provider and geospatial development company. How do we verify if use of a credit card is valid or potentially fraudulent was the question. Where a users mobile phone proved to be the verification method. Validation was provided by GPS data pulled from the users phone, supplied by the phone service provider, tied together with the credit card transaction location. If the two matched the transaction was automatically cleared. Very clever.
